How to Recognize the Fruit of a Love That Draws Two People Closer to God

In a world where relationships are often measured by chemistry, attraction, and the excitement of a new beginning, it can be easy to overlook the deeper signs that reveal whether a love is truly healthy.

A godly relationship is not defined only by how two people feel when they are together during the best moments—the laughter shared over dinner, the adventures they take, or the excitement of discovering one another. While those moments are beautiful, the true character of a relationship is often revealed through something much deeper:

The fruit it produces.

Jesus said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:16). The same wisdom applies to relationships because what grows from a relationship often reveals what is at its foundation. A relationship centered on Christ will not create perfect people, because two imperfect people will always bring their own struggles, fears, and weaknesses into a relationship. But it should create something beautiful: two people who become more patient, more loving, more joyful, and more committed to becoming who God created them to be.

The question is not only, “How does this person make me feel?”

The deeper question is:

“Who am I becoming because of this relationship?”

They Bring Out the Best in Each Other

One of the most beautiful signs of a godly relationship is that both people become more fully themselves when they are together.

A healthy relationship does not require someone to shrink their personality, hide their dreams, or become a different version of themselves in order to be loved. Instead, it creates a space where both people feel encouraged to grow, pursue their passions, and step more confidently into the gifts God has given them.

A godly partner notices the strengths in the other person and celebrates them. They are not threatened by another person’s success, but instead they rejoice when the person they love grows, achieves something meaningful, or takes another step toward the calling God has placed on their life.

The right relationship does not make you lose yourself.

It helps you become more of who God created you to be.

Their Relationship Produces Peace

Every relationship will have difficult moments.

Two people will eventually misunderstand each other, approach situations differently, or experience seasons where life feels overwhelming. A godly relationship is not one where conflict never happens; it is one where conflict is handled with humility, grace, and a desire for restoration.

A green flag is seeing two people who are able to disagree without trying to hurt each other.

They listen before responding.

They seek understanding instead of simply trying to prove their point.

They apologize when they are wrong and offer forgiveness when they have been hurt.

Peace does not mean everything is always easy.

Peace means both people are committed to protecting the love they have built, even when circumstances are difficult.

A relationship rooted in Christ understands that winning an argument is never more important than loving the person standing across from you.

They Become Closer to God Together

The strongest Christian relationships do not replace someone’s relationship with God.

They strengthen it.

A godly relationship creates an environment where faith can grow naturally. Two people encourage one another through prayer, Scripture, worship, and conversations about the ways God is working in their lives.

They remind each other of God’s promises during seasons of uncertainty.

They celebrate answered prayers together.

They encourage each other when one person feels spiritually tired.

The relationship itself is not the foundation.

Christ is.

And because Christ is the foundation, the relationship becomes a place where love can flourish without becoming an idol.

Their Love Extends Beyond Themselves

One of the clearest signs of a beautiful relationship is that its impact does not stop with the two people involved.

Healthy love has a way of overflowing into the lives of everyone around it.

Friends notice when someone becomes more joyful, more patient, and more generous because of the relationship they are in. Family members see when two people treat each other with kindness and respect. The people closest to them recognize when their relationship creates a greater sense of love rather than isolation.

A godly relationship does not pull two people away from the people God has placed around them.

Instead, it encourages them to love others more deeply.

The best relationships do not make the world smaller.

They make the love within it greater.

They Become Teammates Instead of Competitors

A relationship built on faith is not two people trying to prove who is more successful, more talented, or more deserving of recognition.

It is two people choosing to walk in the same direction.

They celebrate each other’s victories because one person’s success does not feel like a loss for the other. They encourage each other’s dreams because they understand that God has created both people with unique purposes.

When one person faces disappointment, the other does not simply offer sympathy.

They stand beside them.

They pray with them.

They remind them of who they are.

A godly relationship feels less like two individuals competing for space and more like two people carrying the same mission.

They Find Joy in Ordinary Moments

Love is often celebrated through extraordinary experiences: anniversaries, vacations, proposals, and once-in-a-lifetime memories.

But most of life is not made of extraordinary moments.

Most of life is ordinary.

It is grocery shopping after a long day.

It is cooking dinner together.

It is sitting quietly and enjoying each other’s presence.

A beautiful green flag is finding joy in those simple moments because it reveals that the relationship is built on companionship rather than constant excitement.

A person who brings peace into ordinary days is someone worth noticing.

Because a lifetime together is not made only of the biggest moments.

It is made of thousands of small ones.

They Encourage Each Other Toward Their God-Given Purpose

A godly relationship does not ask someone to abandon the calling God has placed on their life.

Instead, it encourages them to pursue it.

A loving partner does not see another person’s dreams as an inconvenience. They see them as something worth supporting because they understand that God’s plans for one person do not diminish His plans for another.

They ask questions.

They offer encouragement.

They provide support during difficult seasons.

They challenge each other to continue growing.

The purpose of a relationship is not simply to make life comfortable.

It is to help each person become more faithful to the life God has called them to live.

They Repair After They Hurt Each Other

No relationship will exist without moments of disappointment.

Even the most loving couples will sometimes speak too quickly, misunderstand each other, or fail to show love in the way they intended.

The green flag is not perfection.

It is the willingness to repair.

A godly relationship is built by two people who understand the importance of humility. They can admit when they have caused hurt. They can ask for forgiveness. They can extend grace because they know they have received grace from God themselves.

Love is not proven by never making mistakes.

Love is proven by what happens after the mistake.

Their Relationship Becomes a Testimony

The most beautiful relationships are not the ones that appear perfect from the outside.

They are the ones where people can see God’s work within them.

They see patience where there could have been frustration.

They see forgiveness where there could have been resentment.

They see faithfulness where the world often chooses convenience.

A godly relationship becomes a testimony because it points beyond two people and toward the God who brought them together.

The Fruit of Love

The world often teaches us to ask:

“Does this person make me happy?”

But Christian love invites us to ask something deeper:

“Does this relationship help me become more like Christ?”

The green flags of a godly relationship are found in the fruit it produces—the patience, kindness, peace, joy, and faith that grow when two people choose to love each other while keeping God at the center.

The most beautiful love stories are not simply about two people finding one another.

They are about two people walking together toward God.

And along the way, becoming better because they did.
