What is a Revelation?

A revelation is a deposit of the Holy Spirit into a person. This deposit is just like adding cash to your bank account, except it comes in the form of wisdom, spiritual gifts, and other parts of Christ’s character.

It makes you kinder, more in tune with the mysteries of the spirit, and more understanding of this thing called life.

The Lord gives us a revelation according to His plan.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:10, NIV

What Does a Revelation Look Like?

Revelations come in many forms, from prophetic dreams like Joseph’s (Genesis 37:6) to talks with a burning bush like Moses (Exodus 3:2). During each one you’ll notice a few things:

  1. They seem impossible. Messages in dreams, visits from angels, you name it—when God’s revelation comes, it happens in a way that isn’t logical.

  2. The message comes with purpose. The Lord’s message always comes with information about His plan for your life.

  3. They happen spontaneously. When God wants to share a message, He will come when you don’t expect it.

  4. It is Truth. The message may seem like it contradicts everything about your life, but you’ll know it’s true. God sees beyond what we see and His ways are above our ways.

  5. You receive the power of the Holy Spirit. Every conversation with God leaves you feeling more empowered. You will feel bolder in the character of Christ, wanting to share the gospel and perform acts of kindness.

  6. It is transformative. You leave each encounter with a greater understanding of life and mysteries of the spirit.

  7. It is Final. When God has spoken, He has spoken. There are no follow-ups or addendums—what He has said is all you need.

What Life Feels Like Afterwards

You’re Better at Hearing the Lord’s Responses

In the weeks and months following meeting God, I felt more in tune with Him than I ever had in my life. It was a deep, enduring feeling, like He was suddenly available to respond to me every day.

I started seeing His answers in new ways. One of the prayers I had was that I wanted to have more freedom where I had been used to feeling like I couldn’t enjoy myself.

One day, the Holy Spirit had me put my work down and go to the movies. My plan was to spend the entire day at the computer, but that wasn’t what God wanted.

I enjoyed my afternoon and finished my to-do list later with renewed energy. Finding free time didn’t take planning or scheduling; it existed in the places where I hadn’t made room for Him. And it was His gentle nudge that opened my eyes.

After a revelation from the Lord, you get better at perceiving His different forms of communication.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27, NIV

Deeper Love for People

The next thing I noticed was that my relationships changed.

In the past, I found it hard to speak up about what I thought was wrong or right, always worrying about upsetting someone.

But inside, I would wonder why they thought the way they did, and what I could do to help them.

But after talking with the Lord, I started seeing the world through Jesus’s eyes and learned to simply love people for who they were.

Following a revelation, we see how love and patience helps the people God has brought into our lives.

Greater Joy

God’s Presence makes you feel like you’ve come home from a carnival to a surprise birthday party—the joy just doesn’t end.

Shortly after the Lord left me, my senses were intense. Colors were brighter, things were more wonderful, and I suddenly needed to take pictures of everything I found beautiful.

Later, it got harder to stress about things. I knew the bills would get paid and I knew the work would be finished on time.

If God has spoken, what is there to worry about?

Following a revelation, your joy cannot be contained. You’ll begin to see that there’s so much life to live, so many things to do.

Christ is risen! So we’re full of joy and share it with anyone who will listen.

You’re Full of God’s Peace

The final thing is that after a revelation from God, you are full of His peace.

Before meeting Him, we worry about our lives and purpose. Where are we going? What are we doing? Who’s coming with us?

But the Word of the Lord comes with wisdom, direction, and empowerment. So if He says that you’re going to move to another country, then you’ll move to another country.

And that’s that.

When you know where you’re headed, it’s impossible to worry about the rest.

Summary

Life after a revelation from God is warmer, brighter, and full of peace. Following a meeting with Him, you’ll have:

  • Greater perception of His communication
  • Deeper love and respect for people
  • Greater joy
  • Enduring peace
