One of the sweetest parts of travel is discovering that kindness speaks every language.

It might be a stranger pointing you toward the right train platform, a server patiently explaining a menu, or someone noticing that you look a little lost and offering directions. These small moments can stay with us long after the trip is over.

Travel reminds us that hospitality does not always come from people we know. Sometimes, it comes from someone we may never see again.

Let People Help You

As travelers, we are used to figuring things out. Google Maps, translation apps, itineraries, and travel guides make independence easier than ever.

But sometimes, the best thing you can do is ask.

Ask a local where to eat. Ask someone which train to take. Ask a shop owner about a neighborhood. You may get useful advice—and you may get a conversation you remember for years.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Matthew 7:7–8, NIV

Return the Kindness

Hospitality works both ways.

Learn a few words in the local language. Say thank you. Be patient when communication takes a little longer. Support local restaurants, shops, artists, and businesses. Respect the customs of the place you are visiting.

Remember Who We Represent

For Christians, kindness while traveling has another layer.

Jesus calls us to love our neighbors, and travel gives us plenty of opportunities to practice that command. A kind conversation, a generous tip, a patient response, or simply treating someone with dignity can become a small reflection of Christ’s love.

You do not have to make every interaction profound. Sometimes kindness is simply kindness.

The next time someone helps you find your way, take a moment to say thank you. Then look for a chance to pass that kindness along.

Because the most memorable souvenirs are not the things you bought — it’s the way someone made you feel.
