Are you a fashion lover headed to London? Get all the details on how to dress like the locals in this article!

I always imagined London fashion as the ultimate culmination of business and royalty. I admit it—I’m a fan of posh-ness, I’ll admit to it now. And what I’ve been seeing: plaid long skirts and leather boots, the sharpest collar with the softest fabric—I could melt just looking at it!

But there’s more to London than the traditional look, and you need more than button-ups to add to your closet this spring!

So without further ado, allow me to introduce you to the styles of Great Britain. Here’s how to Dress Like the Locals in London.

The Best Places to Shop in London

London has a little something for every fashion lover. Whether you’re after designer labels, sporty essentials, vintage treasures, or a department store where you can find practically everything under one roof, the city makes shopping an adventure of its own. Here are four places to start, depending on the look you’re going for.

1. Bond Street: The Luxury Street

If your London wardrobe is giving polished, sophisticated, and a little old money, head to Bond Street. Located in Mayfair, this famous shopping destination is home to luxury fashion houses, designer boutiques, and beautiful window displays.

Expect high-end handbags, tailored clothing, statement accessories, and the kind of investment pieces you’ll want to keep for years. New Bond Street and Old Bond Street together make this a lovely area for discovering luxury fashion, while nearby Mount Street offers another collection of upscale boutiques.

2. Oxford Street: The Athletic and Everyday Essentials

For sporty fashion, comfortable basics, and everyday wardrobe staples, Oxford Street is a great place to start. This busy shopping thoroughfare has major sportswear retailers alongside high-street fashion brands, making it easy to find trainers, leggings, sweatshirts, and casual outfits for exploring London.

Look for athletic brands such as Nike and Adidas, and browse nearby stores for everyday pieces that can take you from a morning walk to an afternoon of sightseeing. The surrounding streets also offer plenty of options if you want to mix sportswear with more polished pieces.

3. Camden Market: The Boho and Unique Finds

For something a little different, make your way to Camden Market. This is the place to explore if you love vintage clothing and alternative fashion.

Camden has a creative, eclectic atmosphere, with market stalls and independent traders selling everything from retro jackets to unusual jewelry. You’ll find plenty of personality here!

4. Harrods: The Department Store Experience

No London fashion guide would be complete without mentioning Harrods. Located in Knightsbridge, this iconic department store brings designer fashion, accessories, beauty, and luxury shopping together.

It’s a great stop if you want to browse multiple brands in one place, explore designer collections, or simply experience one of London’s best-known retail landmarks. Even if a luxury shopping spree isn’t on your itinerary, the displays and expertly presented departments make it worth a visit.

How to Shop in London

Shopping in London is all about knowing where to look. Want a designer handbag? Mayfair is calling. Need a new pair of trainers? Oxford Street has you covered. Searching for a vintage jacket that nobody else at brunch will be wearing? Camden is your girl. Once you understand the different shopping districts, the city becomes much easier to navigate.

London’s Seasons

London has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each brings a different look to the city, from sunny afternoons to Christmas lights. The catch? London weather keeps you guessing, so you need an outfit that’s prepared for anything!

Winter: December–February

Winter in London is cold, with average temperatures commonly around 36–48°F (2–9°C). Frost is possible and snow falls, but it’s more likely to be wet and windy! December brings Christmas lights, festive markets, and plenty of reasons to spend time outdoors after dark.

What to wear: The 3 color rule is definitely at play—this is the rule where an outfit can have 3 core colors to create a unified look. But don’t be afraid to add a different color to your look—It’s okay to stand out! For your pieces, find wool skirts, leather boots, and sweaters for layering!

Spring: March–May

Spring in London is all about staying classic. As temperatures rise and flowers bloom across the city’s parks, they expect mild afternoons, cooler mornings, and occasional rain. Typical temperatures range from 52–59°F (11–15°C).

What to wear: London fashion lives on a spectrum this time of year: we’re neutral and cute in tans and greens, or we’re all the way out there in neon and zebra print! Wear a lightweight jacket or cardigan, long-sleeve top, straight-leg jeans, and comfortable trainers or loafers. A midi skirt with tights and ankle boots is another lovely option. And don’t forget a trench coat!

Summer: June–August

Summer in London is made for outdoor cafés, picnics in Hyde Park, rooftop restaurants, and walks along the Thames. Temperatures are mild and warm, with highs around 64–75°F (18–24°C). Rain showers are still part of the package!

What to wear: Look for cotton halter tops, loose tops and bottoms, and comfortable sandals or trainers. Silhouettes during this time of year are either beautifully breezy – think flowing fabrics – or boxy. And a lightweight blazer or cardigan for cooler evenings and a light rain jacket for the unexpected shower!

Autumn: September–November

Autumn is a dream for anyone who loves a good outfit. London’s parks turn gold, orange, and red, while shops display their fall collections. September still feels mild, but temperatures drop as the season goes on!

What to wear: Neutrals come online in the fall, bringing a wave of tan, white, brown and black to the streets! You’ll need a cashmere sweater, a knit top, dark denim, ankle boots, and a leather jacket or wool blazer. Everyone will be wearing their trench coats, while the heavier coats make their way in later in the season.
