Staying inside our comfort zones feels safe, cozy, and easy. But the greatest blessings, personal growth, and exciting adventures happen when we step into new territory. Stepping into the unknown takes a little courage, but that is where our faith truly shines!
For some, that means moving to a new city, changing careers, starting a business, traveling somewhere alone, building a new friendship, or finally pursuing something that has been on their hearts for years. Whatever the change looks like, stepping into the unfamiliar requires courage—and it teaches you to trust God in a way that staying comfortable never could!
So, what does it actually look like to commit your plans to God? Read on to find out!
1. Start With Prayer
Before making a major decision, make prayer part of the process. Bring God your hopes, concerns, questions, and plans, and ask Him for wisdom. James 1:5 reminds us that when we lack wisdom, we can ask God, who gives generously.
Discernment is not simply waiting for a sign! It involves prayer, Scripture, reflection, research, and wise counsel. The Archdiocese of Chicago’s Vocation Office offers a helpful step-by-step guide to discernment that encourages thoughtful decision-making while staying attentive to God’s direction!
2. Make a Plan
Faith and preparation go hand in hand! If you’re considering moving, research the area and the cost of living. If you’re changing careers, learn what the transition requires. If you’re planning a major trip, research transportation, safety, and your budget.
Making a plan means you are taking your responsibilities seriously. As Jesus said, we have to count the cost! But don’t hold them too tight—you never know what God is going to do!
3. Take the Next Step
When God called Abram to leave his country, he wasn’t given a detailed itinerary. He was given a command and a promise!
The same is true for us. You may not know where a decision will lead years from now, but you usually know the next step. That might mean sending an application, enrolling in a course, booking a flight, making a phone call, or having an honest conversation.
The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

4. Know What to Expect
Following God’s direction doesn’t mean every circumstance will immediately become easier. You may encounter delays, closed doors, unexpected expenses, or changes that require you to rethink your original plan.
That is why discernment continues after the initial decision. Keep praying, pay attention to the facts, seek wise counsel, and remain willing to adjust. A closed door does not automatically mean you made the wrong decision, just as an open door does not automatically mean something is God’s will!
5. Hold Your Plans With Open Hands
Perhaps the hardest part of trusting God is accepting that His answer will not look like yours.
You can work toward a goal and genuinely hope it happens while still surrendering the outcome. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord rather than relying solely on our own understanding.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8–9
Tips for New Seasons
- Remember His Promises: Remind yourself daily that God goes before you and will never leave your side.
- Take One Step at a Time: Big changes happen in small, simple moments. Focus on doing good today.
- Connect with Uplifting Friends: Surround yourself with loved ones who encourage your faith and share your joy.
You don’t have to know everything the future holds to step forward with joy. Just trust the Lord, keep an open heart, and enjoy the adventure ahead!
