One thing I’ve learned is that my relationship with God gets a lot deeper on simple trips. I feel more connected to Him, better prepared to receive His wisdom, and my heart is healed. When the skies are blue and you don’t have to rush, it’s impossible not to remember His Grace.

So without further ado, I’d like to welcome you to Quiet Travel, a series about connecting with the Lord through light vacations.

Here are my tips for a Quiet Trip to Germany.

What is Quiet Travel?

Quiet Travel is about slowing down and making time for God. His goodness is always easy to see, especially while we’re out exploring, but worrying keeps us from soaking it in.

When we release our expectations of “doing it all” and our fears that we only have that one chance to travel, we give the pressure to God.

Then we can sit back, relax, and enjoy our travel for everything it is.

For me, that meant light trips: sightseeing, only doing one excursion, or doing all of the recommended activities—while visiting in the off–season.

In every case, God took me to a place I’d been hoping to visit, but the trip was nothing like what I expected. Each one brought me closer to Him, and I came home with another part of me healed.

Where to Go

When it comes to rejuvenation, Germany is perfect. The land has a peace that fills the soul, and the Lord used it to show me that no matter how life may look, everything is okay.

For your trip, consider these destinations:

  • Bavaria – For natural beauty, start here. Known for the Alps, castles, and beautiful villages, Bavaria is perfect for stepping away from the noise.
  • Berlin – A place for exploration, Germany’s capital boasts a rich history and edgy, artistic culture.
  • Rhineland–Palatinate – Home to the Rhine Valley, this region is known for its scenic views and riverside towns.
  • Baden–Württemberg – With spa towns, forested landscapes, and grand architecture, this region offers both refinement and rest.

Things to Do

International Road Trip

The first activity for Quiet Travel is a drive through the country.

Road trips are the natural place for conversation and worship. They also let you move at your own pace, enjoy the views, and follow paths that weren’t part of the plan.

Germany is filled with places to explore. Rent a car and enjoy them at your leisure.

Train Rides Through the Country

The second activity for Quiet Travel is a train ride.

Germany’s train system is a wonderful alternative to driving—no navigation, no urgency.

Few things are as nice as watching creation fly by on the way to your destination.

Consider routes like:

  • Wernigerode–Brocken – A nostalgic journey that takes you through the Harz Mountains on a classic steam-powered train.

  • Wiesbaden–Cologne – A scenic route along the Rhine Valley, passing vineyards, castles, and riverside towns.

  • Hamburg–Munich Night Train –  An overnight ride from Germany’s bustling port city to the colorful Bavaria, with sleeper cabins and meals included.

For flexibility, consider the Deutschland ticket, which provides access to local and regional public transportation across the country.

Time in the City

The final thing every quiet trip needs is a few nights in the city—with or without plans.

You don’t have to fill your schedule to make the most of your time. Let your free moments be just that: free. Enjoy your accommodation, have long meals, and take time to connect with people. That’s where you’ll feel the finished work of Christ.

A quiet trip is built on love, presence, and spontaneity, and you’ll find it in every town, large or small.

Add these cities to your list:

  • Cologne – A historic city centered around its breathtaking cathedral.

  • Dresden –  Known for its grand architecture and Christmas markets.

  • Würzburg – The center of wine country, known for its baroque palace.

  • Esslingen am Neckar – A medieval town known for its charming waterways and old town squares.

  • Füssen – Nestled near the Alps and home to the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Tips

  1. Bring comfort items. Snacks from home, warm sweaters, a journal—whatever you need to feel at home in your skin. Comfort and quiet travel go hand in hand!
  1. Come prepared. Leave early for trains and reservations. Carry both cash and card, and don’t hesitate to ask for help (most people in Germany speak excellent English)!
  1. Release the pressure to do it all. You don’t need to see everything to have a meaningful trip. What matters most is remembering God in every moment.

Summary

There are so many ways to spend time with God. You can drive through the countryside, watch the world pass by on a train, or wander through a historic city—but no matter what you do, He’ll be with you. Take some time and be with Him too.
