Imagine Southern France: hills of green, towns built centuries ago. It’s grand, it’s delicate, and on each street, all you hear are the footsteps of a community.
That’s Perpignan.
Here are things to do on a morning in this border town in our third installment of Quiet Travel.

What is Quiet Travel?
Quiet Travel is about slimming down your itinerary to make time for God.
His goodness is always there, but the stress of travel makes it hard to soak it in.
When we release our expectations of “doing it all” and our fears that we only have one chance to travel, we give the pressure to God.
Then we can sit back, relax, and enjoy the trip for everything it is.
If you’re learning how to let God lead your travels, listen to Episode 2 of our podcast, where we reflect on the ways God surprises us as we trust in Him.
What does Quiet Travel Feel Like in Perpignan?
Sometimes I just like to walk with God. We don’t have to go anywhere or do anything—simply looking around while He feeds me wisdom is enough.
You learn so many things that way. Take a town built long ago. A building 100 years old, grand and intricate, sits in its place while time ticks away; slowly falling away, but still beautiful to gaze upon.
God seems to say, It pleased me for this to remain.
In Perpignan, years of history stand so peacefully that they could almost fade into the background.
It’s the perfect place to wander.
The Itinerary
A Drive on the Outskirts
Begin your morning with a drive. Perpignan sits in the French countryside, which is just as beautiful as you’ve heard. To get there, you can rent a car in France or Spain or book a tour.
Travel took me up the northern route, where flat vineyards became tall trees, green leaves, and miles of silence. The ride felt like a breath of cool, fresh air, clearing my mind and calming my soul.
Go On a Tour
Perpignan used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca, a Spanish kingdom made up of places like Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza. If you enjoy history, a walk through the city will treat you to the wonders of medieval architecture.
Stop by these places:
- Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist – A national monument of France, built over the course of 2000 years.
- Campo Santo – Known for its massive courtyard framed with Gothic arches.
- Le Castillet and the Casa Pairal Museum – The city’s main entrance and former fortress.

The River Têt
While you explore, take a moment to enjoy the peaceful river Têt. It’s the longest in the region, running from the Pyrenees Mountains all the way to the Mediterranean.

Old Fashion on Quiet Streets
It wouldn’t be France without fashion, would it?
Perpignan is nearly empty in some areas, but if you keep your eyes peeled you’ll happen upon the old boutiques filled with vintage designer pieces.
Lunch
Before you go, have lunch near the city center.
Tip: In France, lunch is slow. Prepare for a one and a half to two hour experience!
Consider Les Halles Vauban, a popular market where vendors offer everything from fresh seafood to Catalan specialties.
Summary
Sometimes, all you need is a morning stroll. Spend time with God in Perpignan and enjoy it for all of its beauty.
- Ride to the city
- Take a walking tour
- Enjoy the river
- Browse vintage fashion
- End your visit with lunch
